Its high level walkways were closed off in 1910 owing to its unsavoury reputation for attracting pickpockets and prostitutes. The bascules, originally hydraulically-powered, are now raised about 900 times a year, and require 24 hours’ notice to be opened. Watched the bascules being raised, right after I dashed across! |
