A young artist who captures the vivid
character of her subjects in her drawings, whether they be human figures,
spectres of architecture, or creatures from imaginary realms.
To even begin to appreciate the intricacies
of an image before her, Xing feels the strong need to draw what she sees.
Moments after setting up with pen and
paper, the quality of the air, the atmosphere and culture of the place, take on
a different tone, and perception is altered.
Lines of buildings and movements of people
become much more integrated into the awareness, more clearly understood- the
details register in the consciousness and take up residence within the mind's
eye.
Time does still retain some meaning- for
the pen whose ink is determinedly being nibbed away.
There's no activity like drawing, that
attracts such amazing and interested strangers, and sets off animated and
enquiring conversations, particularly in tourist-filled locations, or cities
crammed full of natural, uninhibited, warm-hearted people.
Xing spent most of the past four years in
Los Angeles, where she earned her
bachelor's degree in neuroscience. This foundation allows her to make a living
from
- reading constantly about the most exciting, cutting-edge
scientific literature she can get her hands on,
- dreaming about technological improvements and thinking about
how the mind works,
- carrying out research to advance this knowledge.
California is fantastic, so in order to
avoid getting completely entranced by a single place, she created a variety of
different lives for herself in a handful of cities all over, each of them as
real and familiar to her as the one she’s always known and loved back home in
Singapore.
In 2005, she lived in paradise (Venice) for
two months, representing Singapore as their pavilion manager during the Venice
Biennale. This glamourous job involved mopping up exquisitely-designed
minimalist bathrooms that featured as part of the exhibit, and having her
picture taken by visitors who were highly impressed by the interactivity of the
installation.
In 2006, a selection of her artwork went on
display at Tanglin Shopping Centre's Art Street bazaar, as well as at an
open-house Artists' Walkabout event at Wessex Estate, both held in Singapore.
Whenever possible, she loves helping her parents organise their exhibitions,
set up their art work, and entertain
visitors, but that only happens when she's back for a visit.
While based in Beijing for four months in
2007, she made numerous studies of traditional Chinese architecture, and
travelled around different parts of the country, mostly to scenic natural
heritage sites, and relatively rural farmland areas. In June, she finished off
her time in China with a mini solo exhibition of her China drawings, held out
of her spacious hotel room in Beijing.
Immediately following that, she stayed in
Cambridge for summer school, and produced a series of drawings, primarily
around London.
Focused on developing her techniques,
observation skills, and accuracy, she draws buildings much of the time, to
practise her precision with lines and proportions.
She draws standing up- it boosts energy
levels and makes her draw faster. Using an indelible-ink pen means that any
mistakes cannot be obliterated, and lines remain dark and strong, resistant to
the weather.
Xing currently resides in her dream city:
Newcastle.
Nestled
in the Northeast of England, where the weather is perfect, the landscapes are
stunning, the people are amazing, and the ‘work’- getting her PhD in visual
neuroscience- absolutely unbelievable!
