Nature's Handiwork
Macaranga gigantea leaves, moulded by the elements into sculptural forms of great visual interest, are the subject of this series. Each measures up to a metre in length, including the stalk. The undulating planes of the leaf-blades, curled or scrolled at the margins, and the sinuous ridges of the venous network attest to the forces of Nature these specimens have been subjected to.
In this approximately life-size painting, the aesthetic appeal of the subject has been greatly enhanced by the virtuosity of technique, the delicate compositional balance and the fascinating light effects.
The dominant light, from above left, reveals a wealth of detail in form and texture. Light from the back sets aglow the leaf fabric of cellulose and lignin with sunset reds, while its diffraction through the holes imparts celestial tones to the dappled shadow in the foreground.
With its complementary blend of scientific accuracy and poetic expression, this series leads the viewer to manifestly new planes of perception and awareness.
