Heliconia rostrata Pendant Firebirds
“Pendant firebirds” dangle on a sinuous stalk from above,
their livery of scarlet and gold
resplendent against a tumult of foliage greens.
They are the flower bracts of Heliconias,
shielding the tiny florets from sight.
Through the interstices of the foreground screen
may be glimpsed a vast stretch of open ground
fringed by masses of flowering vegetation
which lead the eye, in progressively lighter tones,
towards a distant, pitched roof black-and-white residence
silhouetted against a backdrop of wispy firs.
This is from a collection of watercolours, all painted from life.
Each features a botanical specimen
in a scene of lush greenery and wide, open spaces
through which birdsong resonates from daybreak to dusk.
A black-and-white residence beckons you
to a bygone era of World War II.
The estate was then a residential area for the British military.
It now serves a community of artists and individuals
from the adjacent Biopolis,
Singapore’s centre for biomedical research.
