Spathodea campanulata African Tulip
In the foreground of this Wessex Estate scene,
a cluster of African Tulips hover above
light-and-shade patterned foliage
like flaming tongues licking around a brown core
of horn-shaped flower buds.
Contrasting in form and colour with this fireball, in the midground
is the sturdy, forked trunk of a Saga tree,
adorned with the delicate, silvery green fronds
of an epiphytic fern and the broad, ruffled leaves
of a Bird’s nest fern glowing in crystalline tones
of emerald and amber.
Receding into the background,
the corner of a roof and other architectural elements
establish the presence of a black-and-white residence
admidst a profusion of flowering schrubs
and Casuarina trees melting into the distant haze.
This is from a collection of watercolours, all painted from life.
Each features a botanical specimen
in a scene of lush greenery and wide, open spaces
through which birdsong resonates from daybreak to dusk.
A black-and-white residence beckons you
to a bygone era of World War II.
The estate was then a residential area for the British military.
It now serves a community of artists and individuals
from the adjacent Biopolis,
Singapore’s centre for biomedical research.
