Variegated leaves flutter and flaunt their colours
as a North-easterly wind, heralding cooler days ahead,
sweeps over a cluster of Crotons.
Continuing across an open field and stirring up ripples in the verdure,
the wind then sets into dance-like motion
a solitary, old Casuarina tree with creaking trunk and flailing branches before dissipating itself over the steepled roof
of a little church in the grey distance.
The weather vane reorientates itself to the monsoonal changes in the air.
This is from a collection of watercolours, all painted from life.
Each features a botanical specimen
in a scene of lush greenery and wide, open spaces
through which birdsong resonates from daybreak to dusk.
A black-and-white residence beckons you
to a bygone era of World War II.
The estate was then a residential area for the British military.
It now serves a community of artists and individuals
from the adjacent Biopolis,
Singapore’s centre for biomedical research.
