Heliconia bihai Lobster Claw
The broad leaves of a Heliconia, its green tinged with gold and brown,
wave like banners in the breeze
while the distinctive flower bracts of scarlet, edged with golden green,
surge upwards like claws to dominate this scene of Wessex Estate.
A midground array of tall, plumed grasses, ferns and Heliconia cultivars partially obscures a black-and-white residence set against an open field
that stretches towards a blue-tinted backdrop of distant trees and shrubs.
This is from a collection of watercolours, all painted from life.
Each features a botanical specimen
in a scene of lush greenery and wide, open spaces
through which birdsong resonates from daybreak to dusk.
A black-and-white residence beckons you
to a bygone era of World War II.
The estate was then a residential area for the British military.
It now serves a community of artists and individuals
from the adjacent Biopolis,
Singapore’s centre for biomedical research.
