Cucurbita poppo Pumpkin
It belongs to the cucurbita family, which includes squash and cucumbers.
Believed to have originated in Central America, dating back over 7000
– 5500 B. C.
Used as a staple by the native Americans before the Pilgrims landed.
When the white settlers arrived, it became a staple in their diets too.
The pumpkin was one of the group of crops known as the '3 sisters' and
it was grown together with beans and corn.
Each spring, holes were dug into the ground and into each hole was
placed a fish along with a bean, corn and pumpkin seed.
The dead fish fertilised the ground, while the corn stalk provided
support for the bean plant to climb on and the pumpkin provided ground
cover to keep out the weeds and the roots of the bean added nutrients
to the soil.
