These are tropical plants found in S.E. Asia and Northern Australia.
The pitcher releases a pool of water to trap its prey.
This most unusual leaf first looks like a normal leaf, then develops a
tendril at its tip
which further develops into a pitcher.
As it matures, it begins to be inflated with air.
Once inflated, it begins to fill with liquid, then opens, revealing
an enticing interior.
Once an insect falls into the pitcher, it will struggle to get out but
the movement caused stimulates digestive glands to release an acid
that digests the insect.
These pitchers are commonly known as monkey cups,
nature's 'state-of-the-art goblet'.
